My Unique Approach

My approach to Teletherapy is unique because it is personalized to each child and family’s needs and is skilled intervention within the comfort of your own home. The sessions are completed with the parent in the room and with the child seated at a table. The parent will have an opportunity to coordinate about the child’s progress, what worked or did not work with at-home practice, and reassessment of the child’s targeted speech goals. Videos, games, worksheets, flashcards, toys, and food are utilized to achieve maximum participation and attention during these sessions.

Benefits of Teletherapy

  • Greater access to care: Some people are unable to use traditional therapy due to physical disabilities, geographic location, or scheduling issues.
  • High satisfaction: Users of quality teletherapy report high satisfaction with treatment.
  • More privacy: People who choose teletherapy do not have to sit in busy waiting rooms but can seek treatment in the privacy of their own homes.
  • Better public health: The COVID-19 health crisis demonstrates that the ability to seek medical care at home can slow the spread of illness and protect vulnerable populations.
  • Video conferencing actually works like a window into the home, so I’m able to provide the parent with the speech tools needed for success.

FAQs

Is video therapy as helpful as meeting in person?

Video therapy is a wonderful alternative when it is not possible to meet together in an office. Video therapy is being widely used during COVID-19 to ensure health and safety of clients and staff while maintaining face-to-face contact with a therapist.

There are many other situations in which video therapy can increase the accessibility and convenience of therapy, such as eliminating travel to an office, allowing clients with health issues to remain comfortably in their homes, and increasing access to quality services for people who live in rural areas.

Do the parents need to be present for each session?

Parents and/or caregivers are a key component of therapy especially when it comes to toddlers. At least one parent or caregiver should be present during each session. Therapy sessions are designed in a way that empowers parents and caregivers to feel comfortable using tips and strategies taught by the Speech-Language Pathologist.

Is video therapy confidential and private?

Yes. I use Zoom for video therapy, which is a HIPAA-compliant platform. Zoom ensures it is a secure and confidential means of communication.

Is a teletherapy session less expensive than in-person sessions?

Teletherapy sessions typically cost the same as office visits.

How do you incorporate teletherapy into your treatments?

Teletherapy uses live, video streaming to create an in-person “feel” that includes interactive games and exercises. Many children respond well to teletherapy because using technology can be very motivating. Furthermore, teletherapy incorporates toys and games that the child has access to in the home. Using objects the child can access on a daily basis can help increase carryover of skills outside of the therapy session.
